This week in the Lakeshore 7/8 class, we visited Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School for a presentation by KFL&A Public Health called Teens Trashing Tobacco. During this seminar we learned about four aspects, how addiction works and how it’s a vicious cycle that is very difficult to break away from, the cost of smoking, be it monetary or health wise, and how tobacco companies are strategically selling their products, by targeting youth with colourful, candy-like packaging and advertisements in movies. There was also a section about how smoking affects one’s organs, two pairs of pigs’ lungs were brought in, one healthy and the other treated to simulate how a smoker’s lungs would appear. This section was my personal favourite. At school we also started to read and act out Romeo and Juliet. We acted out Act I, Scene I, which was awkward yet entertaining because we used meter sticks and brooms as swords. During English we also learned the literary device of oxymoron and its use in Romeo’s monologue about how love is complex and not all rainbows and sunshine. We also joined in on a class pool on the Winter Olympics, which started this Friday, by choosing five countries and five sports to “bet” on. That was the 5th to 9th in the Lakeshore 7/8 class, a decently eventful week during a snowy beginning of February.
