September at a glance in Kindergarten!
Welcome to Kindergarten! September was a busy month for the Kindergarten class.
We started the year with a play day at Lake Ontario Park. Some of the students got to ride a school bus for the first time, which was very exciting! We played games with the older students, went in the splash pad, played at the park, and had a picnic.
We went to the Kingston Fall Fair where we learned about Blacksmiths, agriculture, and turkeys. We got to pet goats, cows, and visited the Police horse!
We learned about the changes that happen when the seasons change from summer to fall. We began learning our shapes, colours, and numbers and played lots of games.
We began learning about letters and what sounds they make. We do a craft for every sound we learn!

A Busy Month for Grade 5/6
It has been a very busy September in the Grade 5/6 Class!
Our highlight for the month of September was The Amazing Race Kingston. We were split into three groups and given a set of clues and a map. As a group we had to navigate around downtown Kingston to different landmarks.
We got a picture with the Kingston sign, made a wish in the fountain at Confederation Basin, toured City Hall, saw some artwork at Martello Alley, and visited different statues and memorials. After the race we celebrated with some ice cream and gelato in the park! We had a lot of fun learning about the history of Kingston.
In class we have been learning a lot too! In Social Studies, we compared different types of government. In Science, we learned how to use a scale and a graduated cylinder to accurately measure the mass and volume of different solids and liquids. Gym focused on soccer skills which prepared us for the junior and senior soccer tournament.
October is going to be another busy month. We are looking forward to fishing, camping trips, volleyball, going to the Corn Maze, and working on our Science Fair projects.
We can’t wait for some more adventures at Lakeshore School!!
The Grade 5/6’s
Grade 7/8 Had an Eventful September
Hello Lakeshore Community!
The grade 7/8 class had a very busy start to the School year! In Math class, the students have been working very diligently on the Saxon Algebra program as they learn new skills and activate their prior knowledge. The grade 7’s have been reviewing the basic mathematical operations, order of operations, long multiplication, long division and solving word problems. The grade 8’s have been reviewing math operations involving fractions as well as angles, polygons, perimeter, area and circumference. They are ready for more challenges as move into October!
In Science class, the grade 7 class has been learning about Pure Substances and Mixtures, and different ways to separate mixtures. The grade 8 class has been learning about Fluids and Viscosity, and conducted a rate flow experiment involving household materials. It was a bit chaotic but informative!
We also had a busy month in terms of our Outdoor Experiential education. In addition to having a great time at Lake Ontario Park, and participating in the Terry Fox Run – the grade 7/8 class went on a kayaking trip in Gananoque where the students had an amazing time. Our skills and stamina were put to the test!
We are looking forward to the new learning and challenges ahead!
7/8 French - un bon début!
Dans notre cours de français, nous avons déjà fait beaucoup d’activités amusantes. Nous avons commencé avec un contrat d’apprentissage pour qu’on puisse tous sentir à l’aise en classe et savoir quoi attendre . Nous avons appris beaucoup de phrases utiles pour nous aider à exprimer nos opinions et nous avons pratiqué notre vocabulaire avec de nombreuses discussions et débats intéressants sur la technologie, les cellulaires et l’école. Nous avons joué au bingo, à Quizlet et à Kahoot ainsi qu’à un jeu de Cherche et Trouve dans lequel nous devions poser d’autres des questions. Nous avons présenté nos intérêts à la classe et avons déjà fait un quiz avec de bons résultats ! Nous devenons plus confiants et sommes tous heureux pour un bon départ.
In our French class we have already done many fun activities. We started the year with a learning contract so that everyone could feel comfortable in class and know what to expect. We learned a lot of useful phrases to help us express our opinions and we practiced these in several interesting discussions about technology, cell phones and school. We played bingo, Quizlet and Kahoot as well as a human scavenger hunt. We made presentations to the class to introduce ourselves and have even already had a quiz with good results. Everyone is becoming more confident and glad for a strong start.

A Very Busy September in Grade 1/2
We had a wonderful time at the Kingston Fall Fair seeing all of the animals!
On International Peace Day we wrote about peace in our journals.
During our Mission Moon Lego Robotics class, we worked in groups to decide what we would need to take with us to the Moon!
We sampled food from Daphne’s garden, and we wrote about how we are thankful. It’s been a very busy month! We can’t wait to see what exciting things will happen in October!
7/8 Geography - Where we are.
Who knew that there was so much to know! We have been spending our social science time looking at geography, specifically how the physical characteristics of Earth affect and are affected by people and communities. We examined a case study about the Ebola virus through a geographic lens to get to know the four key aspects of geographic inquiry: 1. interrelationships, 2. spatial significance, 3. economic / environmental / cultural and political perspectives and 4. patterns and trends. The grade 8’s played Pandemic, a collaborative game exploring the roles and challenges of keeping viruses from spreading across borders, while the grade 7’s began a journey of discovery through a webquest about the world’s landforms.
We even had a special guest: a British volcanologist who Skyped with us from Germany to give us the inside scoop on all things volcano-related!
September French 5/6 - Introductions have been made
At the beginning of September we learned new French vocabulary to help us ask questions. We got to know each other by playing French games and presenting ourselves to the class. We studied, practiced our vocabulary, and played kahoot!, among other activities. We had many discussions and opportunities to talk and answer questions in French about pictures, videos and comic strips. Our teacher is also our Art teacher so we will be making and illustrating French storybooks for our kindergarten friends.
French in September - so much fun!
So far in French class, we have had a lot of fun, especially making and singing new songs. We learned about ‘Les Objets de la Classe’ (Classroom objects)the difference between masculine and feminine words in French and spelling and activities. We’ve also been practicing our dialogues to introduce ourselves and playing games that get us talking in French more and more. It has been challenging to get all the spelling right and to know the difference between ‘what is it?’ and ‘whose is it?’, but we are happy with French class and looking forward to more fun and learning! The grade 3 and 4 class
Our First Month in Grade 3/4
It is hard to believe that the first month of Grade 3/4 has come to a close. Grade 3/4 students have had a great month and have accomplished a great deal! Friendships have been formed, routines have been established, and the learning has begun! We just know that it is going to be a FANTASTIC year!
Lake Ontario Park
During our first week of school, we visited Lake Ontario Park. Students loved playing games led by Ms. K., running through the splash pad, and climbing on the awesome play structure. It was a great way to get to know one another better and celebrate our first week at school.
The Kingston Fall Fair
On Friday, September 14th the Grade 3/4 class visited the Kingston Fall Fair. Students enjoyed learning, exploring, and tasting at a variety of booths highlighting agriculture in our surrounding area. This year, the theme of the Fair was the turkey. Students even got to meet “Tom the Turkey”! Other highlights of the fair included tasting fresh carrots, petting cows, meeting a police horse, watching a motocross show, and eating corn on the cob!
Learning, learning, and more learning!
Even though we have only been at school for one month, the Grade 3/4 class has already done a lot of learning. In Language Arts, we learned about the differences between retelling and summarizing. We worked to build our writing stamina through journal writing. We just completed a mapping unit in Social Studies which ended with us making our own maps of our dream amusement parks. In Gym, students learned and practiced soccer skills. We have also spent a lot of time working on our Spelling and Math programs this month.
Looking Forward
We have many great things to look forward to in October. Some of the upcoming highlights include trips to Little Cat Creek, Thanksgiving long weekend, a trip to the Corn Maze, Hallowe’en, and finishing our read aloud, The Wild Robot! We will continue to work on our Spelling and Math programs in our groups. In Social Studies, the Grade 3’s will be learning about Ontario while the Grade 4’s explore physical and political regions in Canada. In Gym, we will be playing some cooperative games and beginning our unit on volleyball. We will practice and refine paragraph writing in Language Arts, and continue to work on adding detailed evidence from the text when responding to reading. It is sure to be another super month in Grade 3/4!
