This week was a blast for the Grade 7/8 class! Beginning the week with a Geography “Chalk Talk” for the Grade 8’s, we wrote and drew our ideas, without talking, on a piece of paper in brainstorm format. That was a fun way to explore a concept in a different learning form! Tuesday was Halloween,…

Creative Campus: Costume Creations
AT LAST, OUR HARD WORK CAN BE REVEALED! This has been a difficult secret to keep, but after weeks of hard work, we can finally share the product of Lakeshore’s first-ever Costume Creations program! First, we designed our costume by drawing an illustration to plan what costume pieces needed to be made. In this design,…
Some highlights from week 8!
First off, we can’t believe that we have already finished 8 weeks of school. The means 1/5 of the year is over already! WOW!!! Week 8 was a fairly academic week. There was not a whole lot of extra things happening. In Science, we began our planet project, where we are each researching a planet…
Fire Safety and Diwali
October is Fire Safety month! We had a fireman come into the class and do a presentation on fire safety. The kids got to dress up in fire gear and become Junior Firefighters. We learned about what to do when there is fire, where our fire safety spot is, and how to detect a fire…
Junior Science: Deep Sea Divers
This week in Junior Science we investigated water and air pressure, and how to make our own Deep Sea Divers. We used cleaned out pop bottles filled with water, and folded straws with paperclips to weigh them down. The secret is getting the balance just right so that the Diver is just poking out of the water when you test it in a cup of water.
After the Diver is weighed down properly, we put the cap on tightly. Something really neat happens when you squeeze the bottle… the Diver goes down to the bottom of the bottle!
How does it work? When you squeeze the bottle, the water can’t compress, but the air does, just a bit. So the air bubble inside the Diver shrinks, and the Diver sinks down to the bottom of the bottle. When you let the bottle go, the pressure is released, and the air bubble returns to its original size, so the Diver comes back up to the top of the water!
Ask either of our Junior Scientists to show you! This really is a cool science experiment.
Another Awesome Week!
We cannot believe that we have almost finished two months of school! Here are some of the highlights of our time at school so far. Lego In our house teams for Lego League, we have decided on a Lego project to build. We are all learning about how water travels and is used in different…

Racing Against Drugs
On Wednesday, October 18th, we had the opportunity as a class to participate in Racing against Drugs, a program put on by Kingston: Partners for a Safe Community. It was an action packed afternoon filled with fun games, and excellent speakers. Initially, when Ms. Van De Ven told us we would be participating in Racing against Drugs, we asked how long we had to run for, and who we were racing against. It must have taken Ms. V by surprise, because she literally giggled out loud and explained that it was more of an informative workshop to learn about the harmful effects that drugs and alcohol can have on people.
We arrived at the Thompson Drill Hall to find a huge race track with electronic racing cars on it. Right away, along with 7 other grade 5/6 classes in the city, we listened to a presentation on a police dog, and we watched him search for banned substances in different backpacks. What a great experience to see!
We broke off into 10 different groups and started a circuit of different activities from different presenters. These included members of the OPP, Kingston Police, CN Police, Military Police, The Health Unit, The YMCA, and Kingston Fire and Rescue. We heard presenters talk about various addictive substances and ways to say no, engaged in a lot of different trivia games and activities, and even got locked in a jail cell and arrested.
Half way through the sessions, there was a brain break and huge dance party. Some of us had a lot of fun dancing and laughing along! We even received an apple as a snack. Freshly picked, it was delicious!
At the very end of the day, we raced the other schools on the huge race track. We ended up in 3rd place overall!! The day was engaging, fun, and we learned a lot about the serious effects drugs and alcohol can have on yourself and your family and friends.
In the Days Before Halloween...
This week in Lakeshore the grade 7/8 class had 5 days of anticipation for Halloween, an event scheduled for next week on Tuesday. In other news instead of having a spelling test, we wrote horror stories to share with the class on the following Monday and Tuesday to get in a thematically appropriate mood for…
Novel Study and Clubs
This week we did a lot of work on our novel study, Black Like Me written by John Howard Griffin. On Monday we were given our books and our reader response journals. We read the Prologue and answered questions about the stanza from Langston Hughes’s poem that J.H.G included in the start of his book.…
